The ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar,
which dates back to 2,600 BC, is steeped in tradition and symbolism. Based on the appearance
of the new moon, it associates a different animal with each year in a twelve-year lunar
cycle. The Chinese believe each animal has a profound influence on the personality of
those born under its rule.
In 1999, following
the success of the gold lunar series which started in 1996, the Perth Mint decided to
also issue a series of silver coins commemorating the Chinese Lunar Year. The Lunar
coins come in seven popular sizes, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, 1.2 kilo and 1 kilo
(32.5 oz. - the worlds largest silver bullion coin).
The Australian Lunar series is the
most popular silver coin from Australia. Following the Chinese Lunar Zodiac, a total
of 12 coins will be in this series. Starting in 1999, the series will run through 2010.
