US Mint Sets
Yes, they are here and for the first time ever, the US Mint has produced the coins with a satin finish! The coins are beautiful and are the best examples of uncirculated coins ever!
The US Mint's Uncirculated Mint Sets
Each year the US Mint releases a set of all coins produced for circulation during that year in a package called a US Mint Set. These sets usually contained the cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar and sometimes the dollar (if one was made) from each of the mints that made any for that year. These included coins from the Philadelphia, Denver & San Francisco mints.
Mint sets produced in the 1950s are rare and carry a considerable premium. They did not come in sealed plastic sleeves like mint sets are today. Instead, they came in cardboard holders with cutouts for the individual coins. As a result, most sets from this period have considerable toning and it is rare to fine a set that contains white coins.
In 1979, 1980 & 1981 the US Mint produced an additional mint set called the Susan B Anthony Souvenir Set that contained the 3 coins produced at the Philadelphia, Denver & San Francisco mints. In 1982 & 1983, the mint did not produce any mint sets at all.
In 1999, the mint began producing the 50 state quarters and so the mint sets were split up into two separate packages. Each package from the Denver and Philadelphia mints contained the cent, nickel, dime, 5 quarters, half dollar & dollar coins (except for the 1999 set, which did not have a dollar coin). In 1999, a special mint set for the dollar was again produced for the 1999 version of the Susan B Anthony dollar, just like in 1979, 1980 and 1981.
