The Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe

The United States has issued many coins featuring Native American Indians. Now the Native American Indians have turned the tables ... and have issued their own coins. The Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe were the first Native American Indians to do so. Shawnee heroes are featured on Silver Dollars and Five Dollar gold coins issued by the Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe (Oklahoma). The coat of arms on the reverse of each coin contains 12 stars, representing the original 12 tribes of the Shawnee Indian Nation.

Starting in 2002, the Shawnee tribe of the Indian Nations began issuing a series of commemorative coins. These coins are legal tender within the Shawnee reservation. These coins consist of a $1 silver and a $5 gold variety. The initial coins to be released will be a $1 silver coin in both Proof and Uncirculated condition with the gold coins being issued later in each year. The silver Uncirculated comes in an Airtite and the Proof comes in a hard plastic capsule as well as a felt pouch. A new design is planned each year. Both silver coins are one ounce 999 fine. Only 50,000 of the BU and 20,000 of the proof will be made. We also have them available as a set in a blue velvet gift case.

The important gold commemorative coin is the first gold coin ever issued by a sovereign Indian tribe within the United States. The Five Dollar denomination coin contains 1/5 oz. of pure (999 fine) gold. Gem Proof quality, & minted by the Perth Mint (Australia). Each year will show a different Shawnee hero. The seal of the Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe is pictured on the reverse of the coin. Only 5,000 proof gold coins will be made each year, making this an extremely rare and valuable collector's coin!
