Since
her debut on the gold coinage,
Britannia has appeared in varying
poses and now, in 2007, a new
Britannia joins her sisters.
Designed by Christopher Le Brun, the
new portrait remains faithful to her
character, giving her a more
contemporary air yet still
associating her with symbols of
Britain. With a watchful lion at her
feet, she sits at the seashore, her
hair streaming in the sea breeze,
her love of peace symbolized in the
sprig of olive clasped in her left
hand and her trident and shield
recalling her great maritime
history. This year's design is
extremely detailed and complex. One
of the most complex designs in the
Britannia series we have seen.
