In 1971 the Eisenhower dollar, designed by Frank
Gasparro, went into circulation. The coins obverse features
former US president Dwight Eisenhower. The reverse design is
meant to celebrate man's landing on the moon. The reverse design
features a eagle (symbolizing the US landing on the moon).
The mint mark is located at Eisenhower's neck.
The bicentennial design features the Liberty Bell with the moon
in the background. Production of the Eisenhower dollar ended in
1978. 40% silver versions of both the Proof and BU coins were
produced in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 & 1976.
