 Susan
B. Anthony is the first woman (other than Liberty) to be
featured on a US coin. Anthony was a famous women's suffrage
leader at the beginning of the 20th century. Frank Gagparro also
designed this dollar coin and left the identical reverse of the
eagle on the moon from the Eisenhower dollar on the Susan B.
Anthony dollar. The mint mark is located on Anthony's left
shoulder. Two proof varieties exist that are in high demand, one
from 1979 and one from 1981. The difference in the variety is
the mint mark from each of those year. They are designated Type
I (filled S) and Type II (clear S) coins. The 1979 BU coin also
has two varieties, the near date (wide rim) and the far date
(narrow rim).
